DOMAIN 3:  INSTRUCTION AND COMMUNICATION

Description of Learning:

My Domain 3 learning experience is related to my observations of physical education teachers from Slippery Rock Area High School, Victory Elementary School and Farrell High School.  My observations include witnessing a variety of methods of positive and constructive feedback.  I was able to see teachers communicating goals, objectives, directions, and procedures clearly.  Teachers observed were flexible and responsive to accommodating the particular group in which the teacher was instructing.  In classes we were taught how to communicate clearly and accurately while being sensitive and equitable across diverse populations.

The main classes taken within this domain include:

  1. Human Growth and Development Psychology
  2. Educational Psychology
  3. Practical Introduction to Teaching Physical Education
  4. Secondary Physical Education Teacher Education Methods
  5. Assessment Strategies in Physical Education
  6. Introduction to school Health education

Reflection:

I instruct with clear goals, communicating clearly and accurate with active participation techniques.  I ask questions at various cognitive levels to encourage higher level of thinking.  I like to engage students in the learning process by incorporating a variety of activities and materials suitable for instructional goals and objectives.  I provide feedback in a timely manner and relative to the mosston style of teaching.  I react to student behavior with a sensible, calm and patient manner.  I am very accommodating and flexible in my lesson teaching.  I will revise activities during instructional time in response to students’ feedback.

Plan of Action:

My plan of action will include working hard at understanding what it takes to effectively assimilate information accurately to students.  I will continue to improve my communication skills through the use of handouts, PowerPoint, VARK and other teaching methods.  I will employ divergent questions to bring in other perspectives.  I will encourage student interaction that promotes tolerance of various points of view.  I will respond sensitively to verbal and nonverbal signals from students that indicate lack of understanding.  Finally I will make sure that I accommodate exceptionalities and allow for more challenging activities as needed.
